Curtin University Colombo’s Social Impact Club Brings Hope to Navodaya Special School

Wednesday 15 October 2025 | By Saliya Seneviratne

Curtin University Colombo’s Social Impact Club successfully concluded Project Navodaya, a student-led initiative dedicated to supporting the children of Navodaya Special School. Through collective generosity, the campaign provided essential educational resources, uniforms, and school bags, while fostering a spirit of compassion and community engagement.

Launch of the Table of Kindness

The initiative commenced on 30 September 2025 with the launch of the Table of Kindness, placed in campus premises. Students and staff were invited to contribute books, stationery, and monetary donations. The table symbolised more than a collection point; it represented a shared commitment to making a tangible difference in the lives of children in need.

Fundraising and Contributions

By the end of September, the campaign had raised Rs. 116,420 through the donation box, monetary contributions, and in-kind support.

Partner institutions pledged additional support. Imperial College London committed 15–20 brand-new school bags, while APIIT Colombo contributed stationery and other goods.

Visit to Nawodaya Special School

On 9 October 2025, members of the Social Impact Club visited Nawodaya Special School. The visit provided an opportunity to personally deliver donations and spend meaningful time with the children. The experience underscored the true purpose of the initiative, bringing joy, hope, and encouragement to young learners.

The success of Project Navodaya was made possible through the collaboration of Curtin Colombo staff, the Student Guild, the organising committee, and partner universities. Their combined efforts transformed individual acts of kindness into a powerful collective impact.

Project Navodaya stands as a testament to Curtin University Colombo’s dedication to social responsibility and community engagement. By uniting students, staff, and partner institutions, the initiative not only provided essential resources but also reinforced the values of empathy, generosity, and shared responsibility.
